Sip Stack is a wine journal. You share what you drink with us, and we help you understand your taste. This policy explains — in plain language — what we collect, why we collect it, and what we will never do with it.
01Who we are
Sip Stack ("we," "our," or "us") is an iOS application that helps you identify, journal, and understand the wines you drink. This policy applies to the Sip Stack mobile app and this website (sipstack.app).
Sip Stack is operated by Daniel Hohnloser, based in San Luis Obispo, California. You can reach us at support@sipstack.app for any privacy questions.
02Information we collect
Information you provide directly
- Account information. When you sign in with Apple, we receive your name and email address. You can choose to hide your real email, in which case Apple provides us with a private relay address.
- Wine journal content. Wines you scan or add, ratings, tasting notes, flavor selections, occasions, "would buy again" responses, and wishlist entries.
- Photos. When you scan a wine label, the photo is sent to our label-recognition service (see "Third-Party Services" below). Depending on your settings, the label photo may also be saved to your wine entry.
Information collected automatically
- Account identifiers. A unique user ID generated by our backend to associate your wines with your account.
- Subscription status. Whether you have an active Sip Stack Pro subscription, free trial, or free account.
- Device information. Basic device type and iOS version, used only for compatibility and crash diagnostics.
Information we do not collect
We do not collect your precise location, browsing history across other apps, contacts, health data, financial information beyond subscription status, or any information we don't need to operate the app.
03How we use your information
- To run the app. Sign you in, store your journal, sync across devices, and manage your subscription.
- To identify wine labels. When you scan a bottle, we send the photo to our recognition service to return wine details (name, producer, region, grape, vintage).
- To personalize your experience. To build your taste fingerprint, suggest wines, surface drink-again recommendations, and improve your dislike intelligence over time.
- To support you. To respond when you email us and resolve account or subscription issues.
- To keep the app working. Diagnose crashes, prevent abuse, and maintain security.
We do not sell your data. We do not use your data for advertising. We do not share your wine journal with other users or companies.
04Third-party services
To operate Sip Stack, we use a small number of trusted service providers. Each receives only the data necessary for its specific role.
Apple (Sign in with Apple)
We use Sign in with Apple to authenticate users. Apple provides your name and email (or a private relay email) only at your direction. See Apple's privacy policy.
OpenAI (Wine label recognition)
When you scan a wine label, the photo is sent to OpenAI's Vision API so the model can identify the wine. Per OpenAI's API data usage policy, photos sent through the API are not used to train their models and are not retained for more than 30 days. We do not send your name, email, or other personal details along with the photo. See OpenAI's privacy policy.
Supabase (Backend and storage)
Supabase hosts our database and user accounts. Your journal entries, ratings, notes, and account data are stored on Supabase infrastructure. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest. See Supabase's privacy policy.
RevenueCat (Subscription management)
RevenueCat processes and manages Sip Stack Pro subscriptions on our behalf. They receive your Apple subscription receipt and a pseudonymous user ID — not your name, email, or journal content. See RevenueCat's privacy policy.
Apple (In-app purchases)
All purchases are processed by Apple through the App Store. We never see or store your payment information, credit card details, or Apple ID password.
05How we protect your information
We use industry-standard security practices to protect your data, including encryption in transit (HTTPS/TLS) and at rest, strict access controls on our backend, and Apple Sign In for authentication. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security — but we treat your data with the care we would want for our own.
06Data retention
We retain your account data and wine journal for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we permanently remove your journal entries, ratings, notes, and associated data within 30 days, except where we are legally required to retain certain records (for example, for tax or subscription-refund purposes).
You can delete your account at any time from the Settings screen in the app, or by emailing support@sipstack.app.
07Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights under laws such as the GDPR (European Union) or CCPA (California). These rights typically include:
- Access. Request a copy of the data we hold about you.
- Correction. Ask us to correct inaccurate information.
- Deletion. Request deletion of your account and data.
- Portability. Receive your journal data in a machine-readable format.
- Opt-out. Opt out of any non-essential data processing (we do not sell data, so there is nothing to opt out of on that front).
To exercise any of these rights, email support@sipstack.app. We will respond within 30 days.
08Children's privacy
Sip Stack is rated 17+ on the App Store and is intended for adults of legal drinking age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 17. If we learn that a person under 17 has provided us with personal information, we will delete it. If you believe a minor has used Sip Stack, please contact us at support@sipstack.app.
09International users
Sip Stack is operated from the United States. If you use the app from outside the U.S., your data will be transferred to and processed in the United States, where privacy laws may differ from those in your home country. By using Sip Stack, you consent to this transfer.
10Changes to this policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time — for example, when we add new features or work with new service providers. If we make material changes, we will notify you through the app or by email before the changes take effect. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page always reflects the current version.
